About Homeopathy

Homeopathy is an increasingly popular alternative system of medicine whose basic philosophy is based on the principle of "similars", similia similibus curentur, let like cure like. It has attracted skepticism from the orthodox medical profession, but its success with patients has given it continued growth and development over the past two hundred years. Indeed, the increasing sense of disillusionment with the many side effects of modern medicines has helped its popular resurgence over the last several years.

It was a German doctor by the name of Samuel Hahnemann who discovered the basic principle of similars in an experiment he conducted on himself in an attempt to understand how medicines worked. He had given up the practice of medicine because he was dissatisfied with the medical treatments of his time--bloodletting, the use of mercury and other substances whose side effects were often far worse than the disease itself. He made a meager living translating medical texts and it was through translating a text on the use of quinine for malaria that he began to question the basis on which these treatments had been prescribed. He took some cinchona bark, from which quinine is derived, in order to find out how it would affect a healthy person. After a number of days he started to experience the symptoms of malaria, which cleared up once he stopped taking the medicine. He then tried this out on others and had similar results. This led him to experiment with other substances to find out what symptoms of illness they could produce in healthy people. He called these tests "provings", which tests we still use today to discover the use of our medicines, or "remedies." He then confirmed this theory by giving the same substance to a sick patient with similar symptoms and watching it act curatively.

Hippocrates in the 5th century BC, and country people throughout the world, had understood and used the principle of healing with similars through folk medicine (we still know to put frostbit fingers into cold water for the best results). But it wasn't until Hahnemann developed it into a medical system that it became a highly respected healing art. The standard modern medical assumption had been that if the body produced a symptom, the appropriate treatment would be an antidote, an opposite medicine to the symptom. For example, constipation is treated with a laxative, which in turn produces diarrhea. Hahnemann's provings formed the basis of a new system of healing which he called "homeopathy", a word derived from Greek, homoios (similar) and pathos (disease); which differentiates it from orthodox medicine, which he called "allopathy", meaning "opposite of the disease".

Hahnemann experimented with diluting his medicines to minimize side effects and found that by a process of dilution and succussion (vigorous, forceful shaking) he could produce a medicine that produced a strong curative action with few if any side effects. He also found that the more dilute the substance became with this method the "stronger" it became. We now consider this to be the beginning of the science of "microdose effect", and the "Arndt-schultz" principle of the biophasic response of living organisms to low doses of substances. Modern medical science does not yet understand these principles, but we believe they will become important laws in the medicine of the future. The derision that homeopathy has incurred from the allopathic medical establishment seems to belie its amazing effectiveness in use. The results we see with the use of a dose of Arnica 30C is testament to our understanding and beliefs. The results speak for themselves, and Hahnemann's followers took his teachings to the rest of Europe, North and South America, India, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, and Japan, etc. where Homeopathy is taught and practiced today.
